Used Porsche Taycan: what changes between generations

The 2024 Taycan is not a facelift: Porsche calls it the second generation, and the difference in battery and charging is real. This is what to look at on a used one.

First generation (2019–2024)

The most important buying decision on this generation is the battery. There are two, and they do not only change the range:

BatteryCapacityRapid charging
Performance Battery79.2 kWh225 kW
Performance Battery Plus93.4 kWh270 kW

The Turbo S carries the 93.4 kWh pack and declares up to 560 kW (761 PS) with Launch Control, with a charging peak of 270 kW. On the 4S, the Performance Battery is standard and the Plus is an option.

On a used car the Performance Battery Plus is probably the option that weighs most: more range and, above all, 45 kW more rapid charging, which on a long trip is real minutes.

For the exact outputs and ranges of every variant of this generation (Turbo, 4S, rear-wheel drive) we publish no table: we have not verified their individual data sheets one by one, and we would rather not put up a table we cannot stand behind.

Second generation (from 2024)

Porsche expressly calls it the second generation, and the jumps justify it:

For the Taycan 4, Porsche publishes up to 559 km with the standard battery and up to 643 km with the Plus, and 300 or 320 kW of output depending on version.

The campaigns to check

This is the most important part of the sheet and there is no point sugaring it. The KBA register holds twenty Taycan entries, six of them on the battery or fire risk. The two weightiest:

KBA ref.BuildWhat was wrongCars (world / Germany)
14047R21-10-2019 → 14-06-2024Failure of the front brake hoses149,847 / 11,815
14389R21-10-2019 → 04-03-2024Fire risk. The high-voltage battery cell modules are inspected and optimised diagnostic software is installed77,698 / 3,705

There are four further battery campaigns between 2023 and 2024: high-voltage system sealing, a cell defect and two more from the same year. If you are interested in a first-generation Taycan, the chassis number check is not optional.

How to read these tables. The German KBA register records the campaigns it knows about, and warns that as a rule not every car of the type is actually affected: the build period is a coarse filter. What counts is the check by chassis number at the dealer, which is what we do before buying. The affected-car figures are the register's own, as consulted in September 2026.

And the famous "loss of drive power"

It circulates a great deal, and almost always wrongly. The facts: the American traffic safety authority opened a preliminary evaluation into the 2020-2021 Taycan over loss of drive power and closed it on 23 December 2021. It closed it precisely because Porsche issued a recall to update the software on cars already on the road.

The cause? According to the file, each of the two drive modules carries an inverter, and its software could incorrectly detect a communication fault, log it and trigger a shutdown of the powertrain. It was not the 12-volt battery, even though drivers saw a battery warning on the instrument cluster.

Battery warranty

Porsche covers the high-voltage battery for 8 years or 160,000 km, and additionally guarantees a capacity level: 80 % of the original net capacity up to 3 years or 60,000 km and, after that, at least 70 % until the warranty ends. It is the figure that answers the "what if the battery degrades?" question.

Decisive equipment

Tax: the easy part

A Taycan is fully electric, so the law puts it in the first band — the one for vehicles "fitted with a single engine that is not an internal combustion engine" — and it pays 0 % registration tax, here and in any region. It will carry the ZERO sticker and, in Palma, a 75 % reduction on the annual road tax. You can check it with the registration tax calculator.

A practical note: the Spanish tax office's 2026 valuation table contains no Porsche later than 2021, so for a recent Taycan the value is determined another way. It makes no difference to the amount — it is 0 % — but it is worth knowing.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the 2019 Taycan and the 2024 one?

Porsche calls the 2024 car the second generation: the Performance Battery Plus goes from 93 to 105 kWh gross, rapid charging rises from 270 to 320 kW and range reaches 678 km, 175 more than before.

Is the Performance Battery Plus worth it?

On a used car it is one of the things that weighs most: more range and, on the first generation, 270 kW rapid charging instead of 225 kW.

What warranty does the battery have?

Eight years or 160,000 km, with a guaranteed capacity level: 80 % of the original net capacity up to 3 years or 60,000 km, and at least 70 % after that.

What recall campaigns does it have?

The German register holds twenty entries, six of them on the battery or fire risk. The largest are the front brake hoses, with 149,847 cars worldwide, and the high-voltage battery fire risk one, with 77,698. They are checked by chassis number.

Is it true there is an open investigation into loss of drive power?

No: it has been closed since December 2021, and it closed because Porsche issued a recall to update the software. The cause was the drive module inverter software, not the 12-volt battery.

What registration tax does it pay?

None. It is fully electric, so it falls in the first band of the tax.
